A rumble strip gives a clearly perceptible effect when a motorist passes it. It thus provides an additional attention signal in addition to signs and road markings.

The thickness of a few millimetres on the strip causes:

• a slight vibration for the vehicle
• a rolling noise
• a warning to the driver by repeatedly experiencing the vibrations

When a driver approaches a dangerous point, rumble strips can be used transverse to the direction of travel to slow the driver down.
Rumble strips can also be located in the direction of travel (side or middle of the road) to warn drivers who deviate from their lane.
